Polished Performances
Posted in Uncategorized on March 3, 2016 by Mark WalkerPolished Performances is a new feature here on Marked Movies where I’ll give a brief highlight of an actor who really struck a chord with me in a particular role. This was something I had done many years ago but it was all bundled into the one page instead of exclusively focusing on one individual role. Anyway, since he’s just won a Best Actor Award at this year’s Oscars lets begin with the man of the moment…
• Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio
• Character: Arnie Grape
• Film: What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?
New York Times’ Touch of Evil
Posted in Horror, Uncategorized on October 29, 2015 by Mark Walker
In 2011, The New York Times assembled 13 of the best actors of the year and had them each contribute to a little video gallery where they would play villains. Some of you may have seen these already but for those who haven’t, there are a few twisted delights amongst them and perfect to get you into the Halloween mood. Each video is approximately a minute or less but, in that time, they still manage to convey a surrealistic wickedness.
1: Brad Pitt as The Madman.
On whom he’s channeling: ‘‘Peter Lorre — with a dose of Kramer.’’
2: George Clooney as The Tyrant.
On playing bad: ‘‘I picked Captain Bligh because I liked his hat. Bad guys don’t think they’re bad guys. In film, the best evil performances are when the actor remembers that.’’
CLASSIC SCENE: “Nobody fucks with the Jesus!”
Posted in Uncategorized on October 22, 2015 by Mark WalkerFilm: THE BIG LEBOWSKI
Directors: Joel & Ethan Coen.
Screenplay: Ethan & Joel Coen.
Setting the scene:
Practicing for their next bowling tournament, THE DUDE (Jeff Bridges), WALTER (John Goodman) and DONNY (Steve Buscemi) watch in admiration at the flamboyant bowling skills of JESUS QUINTANA (John Turturro) – a possible future opponent. As they discuss Quintana, they also discuss The Dude’s recent case of mistaken identity where his household rug was urinated on and the job that he’s been employed to do.
Blog’s 3rd Anniversary
Posted in Uncategorized on January 3, 2015 by Mark WalkerOkay, considering my relative absence from the blogosphere in the last few months, I’m in no position to be posting self-congratulatory or self-masturbatory nonsense. However, I only make these posts once a year and I don’t make them to self-indulge.
Cutting to the chase, I make them to thank all you guys out there. As I’ve always said, this site wouldn’t be the same without you. Yes! It’s the third year for me and I’m astonished that I’m still here. Do you want to know why? The reason is because of you… How can any blog thrive or remain alive without anyone interested in reading or peeking in? This post is for you guys and I want to thank you all.
Granted, I took a back seat mid-year but that was due to my passion and campaigning for Scottish Independence (hence the titled photo – incase anyone missed the reference). 2014 was a historical year for Scotland and I, honestly, couldn’t commit to blogging when it meant the future of my beloved country. In hindsight, I wish I had done more (campaigning that is).
Needless to say… I’m gutted with the result. Scotland not only chose to shit themselves at the thought of freedom but the aftermath and choice to stay within the union has left many disheartened. A campaign that began with hope and positivity, unfortunately ended in hatred and disappointment.
I’m not one to say I told you so but even the NO voters are regretting their decision under one of the most ruthless and elitist governments we’ve ever had.
Anyway, enough about politics and more about films and blogging. I’ll, hopefully, start blogging again with the real enthusiasm that I once had and I can’t thank all of you enough for sticking by me throughout this difficult year. It really is heartwarming and (as my previous anniversary posts have done) I’d like to give a shout out to my top five commenters.
#1: Zoe from Sporadic Chronicles of a Beginner Blogger
#2: Fernando from Committed to Celluloid
#3: Alex from AlexRaphael
#4: Cindy from Cindy Bruchman
#5: Mark from Three Rows Back
I hate to single people out (as I appreciate everyone’s involvement) but it always gives me the chance to link to the sites that have given me the most commitment. Please check them out, they will reward you as they’ve done me.
Onwards to the next year friends. Here’s hoping I can be as active as I once was. l’ve learned how to tie my shoelaces in the blogosphere but now I’d like to tie my shit together!
Many thanks to everyone, though. Blogging is hard work and requires a commitment that I’m certain you all understand. I, personally, not only hope to continue but I hope to see more from all of you as well. Go for it people. Take you’re future in your hands!
It’s hard to describe to those that didn’t experience the passion (and) disappointment for Scotland in this year but I hope this rising young Scottish lad can condense it…
2014 in review
Posted in Uncategorized on December 31, 2014 by Mark WalkerThe WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.
Here’s an excerpt:
Madison Square Garden can seat 20,000 people for a concert. This blog was viewed about 69,000 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Madison Square Garden, it would take about 3 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.
TRIVIA TIDBITS

1: Before Tom Hanks made the character of “Forrest Gump” a household name, both John Travolta and Bill Murray were considered for the part. Travolta admits it was a mistake to turn down the role. However, the author of the story always pictured John Goodman as the ideal Forrest Gump.

1: When Richard Nixon was elected President he compiled an “Enemies List” – a list of potential political opponents, of which, actor Paul Newman found himself to be on it. He was #19 for his anti-Vietnam views. Newman said that being on Nixon’s enemies list was “…the highest single honour I’ve ever received. Who knows who’s listening to me now and what government list I’m on”.
TRIVIA TRIBUTE: Robin Williams
Posted in Uncategorized with tags 2014 on August 13, 2014 by Mark WalkerIt’s with a heavy heart that I’ve cut short my recent blogging hiatus to come back and offer up some special Trivia Tidbits after the sad passing of Robin Williams. Suffering from depression for most of his life it just shows how such an illness can overcome a person. Sadly at age 63 he took his own life. As it’s 2014, here’s 14 ways of shedding some light on a great talent from both ends of the dramatic and comedic scale.

1: Early in his career, Williams told a reporter that he was born in Scotland. His original press releases indeed listed Scotland as his place of birth. He admitted that he was “under the influence” at the time of saying this. He was really born in Chicago.

1: Although widely known as “Rocky“, this isn’t, in fact, the character’s actual name. His real name is Robert Balboa – this was seen in a rough script from the second film. He took the nickname from real-life boxer Rocky Marciano.

1: Much of Michael Mann’s “Heat” was based on a real-life confrontation between Chicago cop Chuck Adamson (renamed Vincent Hanna in the film and played by Al Pacino) and the real Neil McCauley (played by Robert DeNiro). Adamson was a retired police officer whom director Mann had been working with off and on since the film “Thief” in 1981. They later worked together on two of Mann’s TV shows “Miami Vice” (1984) and “Crime Story” (1986). According to Chuck Adamson (and confirmed by Michael Mann), McCauley was a professional robber whom he had frequently crossed paths with. Events such as the scene between Hanna and McCauley in the coffee shop and the warehouse sting where McCauley got tipped off that the cops were around due to an officer making a noise really happened. In real life, Neil McCauley was killed during the robbery of a grocery store (similar to the bank heist shootout in the film) by Adamson’s team who were tipped off to the robbery.

1: Christopher Walken, Willem Dafoe, Steve Buscemi and Michael Douglas were all originally offered roles in Robert Rodriguez’s “Sin City“. Douglas was offered the role of Hartigan (played by Bruce Willis), Buscemi was offered the part of Junior (played by Nick Stahl) when he became the Yellow Bastard, and Dafoe and Walken were both offered the role of Senator Roark (played by Powers Boothe).
CLASSIC SCENE: “Infringement! You blinked”
Posted in Uncategorized with tags 2012 on May 1, 2014 by Mark WalkerFilm: THE MASTER
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Screenplay: Paul Thomas Anderson
Setting the scene: Escaping from an upstairs party, FREDDIE QUELL (Joaquin Phoenix) is invited into the suite of LANCASTER DODD (Philip Seymour Hoffman) in order to sample some of Freddie’s homemade alcohol. Both men are just getting to know one another but Freddie is interested in joining “The Cause” – a cult, faith-based organisation of which Dodd is the charismatic leader (or Master). To test Freddie’s commitment, Dodd suggests that he goes through a series of questions known as ‘informal processing’.

1: The title of the film “American Beauty” refers to a breed of roses that while pretty and appealing in appearance, is often prone to rot underneath at the roots and branches of the plant. Thus, the tagline “…look closer” tells the viewer that when they look beyond the “perfect suburban life” they will find something rancid at the root.
Spin-Off Blogathon
Posted in Uncategorized with tags 2014 on March 23, 2014 by Mark WalkerSati over at the always interesting and visually stunning blog Cinematic Corner has came up with a great idea for her first Blogathon. It leaves a lot of room for choices but the rules are fairly simple in that we are asked to choose a minor character that we love and why we would like to see them take the leading role in a film. What would that film then be like? For further information stop by Sati’s blog here and get involved. And now I invite you to…
“Sit down… grab yourself an eggroll. We got everything here from a diddle eyed Joe to a damned if I know.“…
And by that, I’m talking about Gary Oldman’s marvellous character from Tony Scott and Quentin Tarantino’s
“True Romance“.
It ain’t white boy day, is it? Naw man, it ain’t white boy day – it’s
DREXL SPIVEY.
Drexl is a pimp who’s also involved in the narcotic’s business with a high ranking gangster known as Blue Lou Boyle. He has scars on his face and one of his eye’s has seemingly lost it’s sight. Added to which, he’s a white man with dreadlocks who believes himself to be a black Rastafarian. Drexl is a merciless brutal killer and a man with whom you do not fuck. As he was once the pimp of Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette), he is confronted by Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) which results in being the catalyst for a crime spree involving mobsters, police and Hollywood producers.
What’s not to be interested in when we are first introduced to Drexl? The scars are on his face and dress sense are enough to grab your attention. In the space of 10 minutes screen time, Oldman really brings this character alive and makes a lasting impression. Despite an abundance of talent in True Romance, Drexl is, without doubt, the most memorable character. So much so, that he’s simply not in it enough.
In a prequel to the film, the possibilities would be endless when incorporating Tarantino’s criminal underworld. We’d witness the rise of Drexl from his younger years as a viscous street hood and hired-gun under the guidance of L.A. crime bosses Joe Cabot (Lawrence Tierney) and Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames). His viscousness would eventually invite the attention of dogged and equally sadistic police detective Jack Scagnetti (Tom Sizemore). Scagnetti would bring Drexl to justice with him serving an 8 year sentence in San Quentin prison where he would befriend Vic Vega (Michael Madsen). Once released, he would again go back to his old habits and become involved in the sex and drug trade before his involvement with Blue Lou Boyle (Robert De Niro) and his eventual confrontation with Clarence (Christian Slater).

As if that’s not enough, Gary Oldman had already stated in an interview that he would love to do a film on Drexl Spivey.
